A Dangerous Conflation

An open letter from Jewish writers

Liebe Leser*innen

Um der Lähmung angesichts der unbeirrt fortgeführten Massaker in
Gaza/Israel/Palästina entgegenzuwirken, veröffentlichen wir hier einen
(weiteren) offenen Brief, der bereist am 2. November veröffentlicht
wurde, aber nach unserem Wissen noch nicht auf deutsch übersetzt wurde.

Der Brief richtet sich in allererster Linie an eine us-amerikanische
Öffentlichkeit. Leider bleibt auch er den gängigen Gegenübersetzungen
von „Völkern“ verhaftet.

Er setzt in unseren Augen dennoch ein wichtiges Zeichen gegen die
unzulässige Vermischung von Antizionismus und Antisemitismus.

Eine Gruppe jüdischer Autor*innen verfasste diesen Brief, nachdem sie
sah, dass ein altes Argument neue Kraft gewann: die Behauptung, dass
Kritik an Israel antisemitisch sei. Die Redakteur*innen einer
konzerneigenen Zeitschrift waren bereit, den Brief zu veröffentlichen,
doch ihre Anwält*innen rieten davon ab. Die Autor*innen teilen diesen
Brief in Solidarität mit denjenigen, die sich weiterhin für die
Freiheit der Palästinenser*innen einsetzen.



 Eine gefährliche Gleichsetzung

Wir sind jüdische Schriftsteller*innen, Künstler*innen und
Aktivist*innen, die sich von der weit verbreiteten Behauptung
distanzieren wollen, dass jede Kritik an Israel per se [lateinisch: "an
und für sich"] antisemitisch sei. Israel und seine Verteidiger*innen
haben diese rhetorische Taktik lange benutzt, um Israel vor der
Rechenschaftspflicht abzuschirmen, die milliardenschweren Investitionen
der USA in Israels Militär zu rechtfertigen, die tödliche Realität der
Besatzung zu verschleiern und die palästinensische Souveränität zu
leugnen. Jetzt wird diese hinterlistige Knebelung der freien
Meinungsäußerung benutzt, um Israels anhaltende militärische
Bombardierung des Gazastreifens zu rechtfertigen und die Kritik der
internationalen Gemeinschaft zum Schweigen zu bringen. 

Wir verurteilen die jüngsten Angriffe auf israelische und
palästinensische Zivilist*innen und beklagen die entsetzlichen Verluste
an Menschenleben. In unserer Trauer sind wir entsetzt, dass der Kampf
gegen den Antisemitismus als Vorwand für Kriegsverbrechen (1) mit

Antisemitismus ist ein unerträglich schmerzhafter Teil der
Vergangenheit und Gegenwart unserer Gemeinschaft. Unsere Familien sind
vor Kriegen, Schikanen, Pogromen und Konzentrationslagern geflohen. Wir
haben die lange Geschichte der Verfolgung und Gewalt gegen Jüd*innen
studiert und nehmen den anhaltenden Antisemitismus, der die Sicherheit
von Jüd*innen in der ganzen Welt gefährdet, ernst. Im Oktober dieses
Jahres jährte sich der schlimmste antisemitische Anschlag, der je in
den Vereinigten Staaten verübt wurde, zum fünften Mal: die elf
Gottesdienstbesucher*innen des Tree of Life - Or L'Simcha in Pittsburgh
wurden von einem bewaffneten Täter ermordet, der Verschwörungstheorien
vertrat, die Jüd*innen für die Ankunft mittelamerikanischer
Migrant*innen verantwortlich machten und damit beide Gruppen
entmenschlichte. Wir lehnen Antisemitismus in all seinen Formen ab,
auch wenn er sich als Kritik am Zionismus oder der Politik Israels
tarnt. Wir erkennen auch an, dass, wie der Journalist Peter Beinart
2019 schrieb, "Antizionismus nicht von Natur aus antisemitisch ist -
und zu behaupten, er sei es, benutzt jüdisches Leiden, um
palästinensische Erfahrungen auszulöschen." 


Wir finden, dass diese rhetorische Taktik im Gegensatz zu jüdischen
Werten steht, die uns lehren, die Welt zu reparieren, Autoritäten zu
hinterfragen und die Unterdrückten gegenüber den Unterdrücker*innen zu
verteidigen. Gerade wegen der schmerzhaften Geschichte des
Antisemitismus und der Lehren aus den jüdischen Texten setzen wir uns
für die Würde und Souveränität des palästinensischen Volkes ein. Wir
lehnen die falsche Wahl zwischen jüdischer Sicherheit und
palästinensischer Freiheit, zwischen jüdischer Identität und der
Beendigung der Unterdrückung der Palästinenser*innen ab. Wir glauben
vielmehr, dass die Rechte von Jüd*innen und Palästinenser*innen Hand in
Hand gehen.  Die Sicherheit eines jeden Volkes hängt von der Sicherheit
des anderen ab. Wir sind sicherlich nicht die Ersten, die das sagen,
und wir bewundern diejenigen, die sich diese Denkweise nach so viel
Gewalt zum Vorbild genommen haben. 


Wir verstehen, wie Antisemitismus und Kritik an Israel oder dem
Zionismus gleichgesetzt worden sind. Seit Jahren halten sich Dutzende
von Ländern an die Arbeitsdefinition der 'International Holocaust
Remembrance Alliance' für Antisemitismus. Die meisten der elf Beispiele
für Antisemitismus beziehen sich auf Äußerungen über den Staat Israel,
wobei einige offen genug für Interpretationen sind, dass sie den
Bereich der akzeptablen Kritik einschränken. Darüber hinaus stuft die
'Anti-Defamation League' Antizionismus als Antisemitismus ein, obwohl
viele ihrer eigenen Expert*innen Bedenken haben. Diese Definitionen
haben dazu beigetragen, dass die israelische Regierung ihre Beziehungen
zu rechtsextremen, antisemitischen politischen Kräften von Ungarn über
Polen bis hin zu den Vereinigten Staaten und darüber hinaus vertieft
hat und Jüd*innen in der Diaspora gefährdet. Um diesen pauschalen
Definitionen entgegenzuwirken, veröffentlichte eine Gruppe von
Antisemitismusforscher*innen im Jahr 2020 die 'Jerusalemer Erklärung'
(4), die spezifischere Leitlinien zur Identifizierung von
Antisemitismus und zu dessen Abgrenzung von Kritik und Debatten über
Israel und den Zionismus enthält.

Anschuldigungen von Antisemitismus bei der geringsten Beanstandung der
israelischen Politik hat es Israel lange Zeit ermöglicht, ein Regime
aufrechtzuerhalten, das von Menschenrechtsgruppen,
Wissenschaftler*innen, Rechtsanalytiker*innen sowie palästinensischen
und israelischen Organisationen als Apartheid bezeichnet wurde. Diese
Anschuldigungen üben weiterhin eine abschreckende Wirkung auf unsere
Politik aus. Dies hat zu einer politischen Unterdrückung im
Gazastreifen und im Westjordanland geführt, wo die israelische
Regierung die bloße Existenz des palästinensischen Volkes mit dem
Judenhass in der ganzen Welt in einen Topf wirft. In ihrer Propaganda,
die sich nach innen gegen die eigenen Bürger*innen und nach außen gegen
den Westen richtet, behauptet die israelische Regierung, dass es bei
den Beschwerden der Palästinenser*innen nicht um Land, Mobilität,
Rechte oder Freiheit gehe, sondern um Antisemitismus. In den letzten
Wochen hat die israelische Führung die Geschichte jüdischen Traumas
weiter instrumentalisiert, um die Palästinenser*innen zu
entmenschlichen. In der Zwischenzeit werden Israel*innen verhaftet oder
von ihrer Arbeit suspendiert, weil sie in den sozialen Medien Beiträge
zur Verteidigung des Gazastreifens veröffentlicht haben. Israelische
Journalist*innen fürchten Konsequenzen, wenn sie ihre Regierung
kritisieren.


Wenn man jede Kritik an Israel als antisemitisch bezeichnet, wird
außerdem in der allgemeinen Vorstellung Israel und das gesamte jüdische
Volk gleichgesetzt. In den letzten zwei Wochen haben wir erlebt, wie
gleichermaßen Demokrat*innen und Republikaner*innen jüdische Identität
nur auf der Basis der Unterstützung für Israel zusprechen [gate-keep
Jewish identity on the basis of support for Israel]. Ein vager Brief,
der von Dutzenden von Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens
unterzeichnet und am 23. Oktober veröffentlicht wurde, wiederholte
Präsident Bidens Positionierung als Fürsprecher des jüdischen Volkes
auf der Grundlage seiner Unterstützung für Israel. Als die 92NY eine
Veranstaltung mit dem Autor Viet Thanh Nguyen verschob, der kürzlich
einen Brief unterzeichnet hatte, in dem er ein Ende der israelischen
Angriffe auf Gaza forderte, begann ihre Erklärung damit, dass sie ihr
Identität als "eine jüdische Institution" herausstellten. Wie andere
beobachtet haben, werden Instrumente zur geschichtlichen Einordnung der
Anschläge vom 7. Oktober als Verleugnung des jüdischen Leidens denn als
notwendig angesehen, anstatt sie als notwendig zu begreifen, um diese
Gewalt zu verstehen und zu beenden. 


Die Idee, dass jede Kritik an Israel antisemitisch sei, vertieft die
Sichtweise auf Palästinenser*innen, Araber*innen und Muslim*innen als
von Natur aus verdächtig; als Vertreter*innen des Antisemitismus,
solange sie nicht ausdrücklich etwas anderes sagen. Seit dem 7. Oktober
sind palästinensische Journalist*innen einer beispiellosen
Unterdrückung ausgesetzt. Ein palästinensischer Staatsbürger Israels
wurde wegen eines Facebook-Posts aus dem Jahr 2022, in dem die erste
Säule des Islam zitiert wurde, aus seinem Job in einem israelischen
Krankenhaus entlassen. Europäische Politiker*innen haben Pro-Palästina-
Proteste verboten und das Zeigen der palästinensischen Flagge
kriminalisiert. In London hat ein Krankenhaus kürzlich Kunstwerke von
Kindern aus dem Gazastreifen abgehängt, nachdem eine pro-israelische
Gruppe behauptet hatte, jüdische Patient*innen würden sich dadurch
"verletzlich, belästigt und schikaniert" fühlen. Irgendwie wurde sogar
Kunst von palästinensischen Kindern von einer Halluzination der Gewalt
begleitet. 


Die US-amerikanische Führung hat diese Gelegenheit genutzt, um
weiterhin die Sicherheit von Jüd*innen mit einer bedingungslosen,
unerschütterlichen militärischen Finanzierung Israels gleichzusetzen,
ohne jede Absicht, Frieden zu schließen. Am 13. Oktober verbreitete das
US-Außenministerium ein internes Memo, in dem die Beamt*innen
aufgefordert wurden, die Begriffe "Deeskalation/Friedensstillstand",
"Ende der Gewalt/des Blutvergießens" oder "Wiederherstellung der Ruhe"
nicht zu verwenden. Am 25. Oktober zweifelte Biden die Zahl der
palästinensischen Todesopfer an und nannte sie den "Preis" für Israels
Krieg.  Eine solch grausame Logik wird weiterhin sowohl Antisemitismus
als auch Islamophobie fördern. Das Department of Homeland Security
bereitet sich auf einen erwarteten Anstieg von Hassverbrechen gegen
Jüd*innen und Muslim*innen vor - er hat bereits begonnen. 

Für jeden von uns ist die jüdische Identität keine Waffe, die wir im
Kampf um die Macht des Staates einsetzen können, sondern eine Quelle
generationenübergreifender Weisheit, die besagt: Gerechtigkeit,
Gerechtigkeit, du sollst nach ihr streben. Tzedek, tzedek, tirdof. Wir
sind dagegen, dass unser Schmerz ausgenutzt und unsere Verbündeten zum
Schweigen gebracht werden. 

Wir fordern einen Waffenstillstand in Gaza, eine Lösung für die sichere
Rückkehr der Geiseln in Gaza und der palästinensischen Gefangenen in
Israel sowie ein Ende der andauernden israelischen Besatzung. Wir
fordern auch die Regierungen und die Zivilgesellschaft in den
Vereinigten Staaten und im gesamten Westen auf, sich gegen die
Unterdrückung der Unterstützung für Palästina zu stellen. 

Und wir weigern uns, zuzulassen, dass solche dringenden und notwendigen
Forderungen in unserem Namen unterdrückt werden. Wenn wir sagen: "Nie
wieder", dann meinen wir es auch so.
